Gdynia Shipyards: Delivery of two Car Carriers built by Gdynia Shipyards took place during 2000, both equipped with Totem Plus IMACS systems. The systems combine Engine Monitoring, Automation and Machinery Control, Fault Analysis, Level Gauging and Loading Program as one integrated system. The two ships are 6100 units Pure Car Carriers, with a second pair scheduled to be delivered during 2001. |
TankMate on the go: When the 18 years old tanker World Bridge was purchased last May, the Tank Gauging System was inoperative. Delivery of vessel was within 4 weeks and normal supply of such systems is about 15 weeks. Totem Plus took the challenge, hard-pressed Krohne to manufacture the Radars in a record 4 weeks period (Bravo!), and sent two engineers to join the vessel in Singapore. One week later a new system, including Level Gauging radars and Integrated Loadicator, was up and running. Totem Plus engineers were landed ashore at Sri Lanka by boat. |
We took the opportunity of the Nor Shipping 2001 exhibition to introduce our new PC-based VDR, called Totem VDR. The VDR includes a unique external unit (Protective Memory Capsule) with latest electronic technology. The VDR conforms fully, with all IMO and IEC requirements. The exhibition was a very busy one and there was a high interest in our products. |
Tank Gauging System on largest floating ULCC The installation of three new tank gauging systems on Wallem Ship Management operated tankers - Sea Giant, Crude Baltic and North Pacific - was completed successfully last month. According to our information, the Sea Giant is the largest floating vessel in the world today - 450,000 tons DWT. Sea Giant is owned by Frontline Management, Oslo. The tank gauging systems were based on Krohne BM-70 Nautic Radars combined with Totem Plus design, engineering and software. |

The new 4,500 car units Car Carrier currently under construction at Gdynia shipyard in Poland will be installed with Totem Plus' IMACS (Integrated monitoring, control and alarm) systems. All aspects of ship control will be unified to this system, such as tank gauges, engine monitoring and control, and loading. This new sophisticated concept uses of-the-shelf commercial components - such as Siemens S7-400 PLC units for CPU redundancy - and includes a network of PCs using Ethernet, which will be located all over the ship. This system is completely new in the industry, and has many exciting features. It can, for example, analyse offline the information recorded in all the systems, and make detailed graphs with the statistics, using pre-set criteria. This integrated system can also transfer data ashore via e-mail (whole month or last hour), so problems onboard can be solved easily, and advice can given to the crew. IMACS also allows for extensive offline analysis of both data and alarms. The software is user-friendly, uses smart screens, and features extensive data-logging options, which give the user accurate online control of the whole machinery plant. Other features include: redundancy of CPU - there is automatic take-over if one PLC fails; alarm log and print-out, including fault analysis of alarms from the history file; and password restricted access. A 'consequences of action' function has also been included. This shows the user, before any settings are changed, the consequences of the settings change - for example, what would happen if a valve was adjusted and the wrong fuel tank was emptied. This minimises human error, and Totem believes that it is the first to use this very clever piece of software. |
TOTEM PLUS is happy to announce that TOTEM VDR has been type approved by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and received the MED-B certificate in November 2002. TOTEM VDR system and TOTEM PMC (Protective Memory Capsule) were approved separately. TOTEM VDR advanced technical design has some special features: 1. Contrary to other VDRs in the market, Totem VDR does not use mixing of audio channels. High quality audio recording of each individual channel is carried out in modern MP3 format for up to 8 individual channels in the standard configuration. 2. TOTEM PMC comes with 2GB memory, enough for the mandatory 12 hours recording, which can be expanded to 4GB for special applications. 3. A common Ethernet protocol is used for transferring data (standard Windows files) from the TOTEM VDR system into TOTEM PMC. 4. TOTEM VDR is easy to install, with ample space inside the main cabinet allowing easy access to terminals and electrical connections. 5. TOTEM VDR has a built in PLC (Siemens S7-200), allowing easy recording of analogue and binary signals - a definite advantage for retrofit jobs. TOTEM VDR was already installed with great success on several ships, including new buildings in Stocznia Gdynia and Samsung shipyards and several retrofits on old passenger ships. Orders for 2003 are growing constantly. |
Totem Plus has been selected to take part in the construction of two new hybrid type reefer ships, a new generation of ships combining refrigerated and containerized cargo carrying possibilities, which represent the future path in the reefer trade. The advanced and versatile 460,000 ft3 (refrigerated cargo capability), 15,000dwt design has been developed jointly by Agrexco, MPC (Munchmeyer Peterson) Marine, Viana do Castelo yard (the Portuguese shipbuilder) and German technical consultancy Schiffko. Totem Plus will supply the ships with its IMACS system, an integrated Monitoring, Control and Alarm system for Engines and Machinery onboard ships. The comprehensive system provides integration of Power Management, Tank Level Indication, Anti Heeling and Loading Program in addition to the "standard" Engine Monitoring and automation features. Construction of the new reefer ships is scheduled to Sep. 2003. |
Totem Plus has received an order from Gdynia Shipyard to supply Integrated monitoring control and alarm systems (Totem IMACS) and Voyage data recorder systems (Totem VDR) for four new 4,500 car units Car Carriers currently being built at the Poland based shipyard. These four new car carriers will join the four 6,500 car units ones already outfitted with Totem systems which construction had been completed last year. |
Shina Shipyard, the Korean based shipyard, has selected Totem Plus to supply Voyage Data Recorder systems for new 37,000 DWT chemical tankers currently under construction at the yard. The initial order is for 3 new tankers with an option for one more. The first of the VDR systems is scheduled for delivery in March 2004. |
Totem Plus is gaining more and more experience in the challenging market of Voyage Data Recorders installation on existing ships. Adding to its impressive record of retrofits Totem Plus has successfully completed retrofitting six Greek owned vessels with it's VDR system (Voyage Data Recorder) with one more retrofit scheduled for completion on August 2003. Totem Plus supplied, installed and commissioned the VDR systems on board Egnatia III and Posseidonia, passenger ferries owned by Hellenic Mediterranean; Millennium Express and Hermes V, passenger ferries owned by Access Ferries; and Aiolos Express and Aiolos Kenteries, passenger ships owned by Nel Lines. Nel Lines' Aiolos Express II, a high-speed carrier is currently being retrofitted with Totem Plus VDR system in Piraeus. |

Totem Plus introduces its second generation VDR , a well-proven and affordable system that fully complies with IMO regulations and is typed approved by DNV. . The S-VDR gained major interest and has resulted in several actual orders to be installed on board existing vessels during 2005. |
During year 2004 5 more S-VDR were installed by Totem Plus technicians onboard existing vessels. To name few: M/V Gioventu; M/V Mirage; M/V Royal Pacific Unlike other past requirements to install new systems on existing ships, the VDR was unique. It is not a stand alone system (such as the GMDSS) but rather a complex interface to many different systems with different functions and different types of outputs. The interface problem consist substantial difficulties on retrofit ships. However, Totem Plus has built in Siemens PLC which makes interface to a large number of binary or analog inputs, allowing readout of NON NMEA systems. Totem Plus vast experience in automation and monitoring systems, is enabling to manage well and very cost effective the challenge of almost any complex interface. |
